AGUALENTE ™
Water Borne Pre-Cat Lacquer
I’m not actually sure just when M.L.Campbell introduced this new waterborne finish, but it must have been at least a year or so ago. I would think that a product this good would have been herald with a bit more fan fair! I’ve been a user of waterborne finishes for quite some time now at this one really gets me exited. Campbell’s other product is a waterborne call Ultrastar and it was one of the first ones I used back in 2000. It was and still is a good product, but I’m sure it will be supplanted by Agualente in short order, Agualente is that good.
The first thing I noticed about Agualente was that it’s a bit “thicker” then Ultrastar, the color is the same and the order is almost identical. The data sheet is also much improved over its predecessor as well. It now reads like its well known siblings with excellent marks I might add. The product is self sealing so there isn’t a need for a separate sealer. One less material to store in the shop is always a good thing.
I had a chance to try it out for the first time on my own kitchen cabinets that I’m making. To my delight it was very easy to use (other than being just a bit thicker then I was accustom to), sprayed great, I didn't need to thin it and it dried fast. I was able to sand my work pieces in about 20 minutes which meant I could have a finished a part in about an hour. Once I had a piece done I was able to test its mar resistance by using the simple thumbnail test. This is where you just drag your nail across the surface of a freshly done piece. Freshly meaning about a day old. To my delight I couldn’t scratch the surface. This was always a concern when using Ultrastar as it didn’t get up to snuff for about a week and sometimes longer than that.
I haven’t had a chance to run any other tests, but I’m confident that it will do just fine. You can buy Agualente for around $45.00 a gal which is a very good price. I also spoke with the rep from M.L. Campbell and he said there were plans to also introduce a pigment version as well. So if you’ve been thinking about trying waterborne finishes or you weren’t quite happy with the one you’re using, you might what to give Agualente a try.
