One final sign of how well a finish will preform is how well it adheres to the surface of the work. So I thought I'd give Fuhr 355 a test. In the test piece I was using I made a square knife cut through the film and into the wood. I made sure to go over a spot already damaged. This would give more surface to "pull" from.
Keep in mind that this finish is only 3 days old and is over a product by a different manufacture. In this case ML Campbell WW2 stain. Which is a great product by the way.
The first test was using a standard piece of 3M masking tape. I placed it over the cuts and up into an area where there were no cut of nicks at all. I rubbed and pressed into the surface as best I could. Waited a minute of so and then pulled the tape off. . .
After ripping the tape off, only a minimal release of the finish was noticeable. The release only occurred at the edges of the knife marks. No failure of the finish was evident at all in the field. In all it preformed quite well I believe. In all it preformed quite well I believe.
The next test was with ordinary duct tape. This is quite sticky and will rip just about anything off. I followed the same procedure as with the masking tape when applying it.
Once I pulled the tape once again very little remove of the finish was noticeable. What actually happened was some stain was removed form where the finish was removed by the first and the scratch test. But once again no finish whatsoever was removed from the field.
